Website Grader

October 3rd, 2008

Inspired by the Internet Marketing Kit by Hubspot, I spent last two days tuning newcircleconsulting.com, and moved up it’s grade at www.websitegrader.com from 81 to 90 within 48 hours. Woo hoo! (www.newcircleconsulting.com gets 88 only, 2 points lower than newcircleconsulting.com, not sure why these two are different.)

Here is what I did:

  • Reduced title tag to less than 70 chars and meta descriptions to 150 chars. Also reduced the keywords to 10 (I found that this has a big impact on the score)
  • Fixed image alt tags
  • Made sure h1, h2 headings are used, not just a styled div
  • Submitted the website to DMOZ (but this is not showing up yet … when New Circle gets in DMOZ, this website grade might increase more)
  • Set up delicious account and bookmarked newcircleconsulting.com
  • Submitted one webpage and one blog post to digg.

I think a large part of us having this high score is because we have a blog which has a RSS feed. Also this blog helped getting quite a bit of inbound links.

If you don’t have one already, adding a blog is definitely worth considering.
